Learn What Your Energy Bill Powers

We're building tomorrow's grid today—one that will power New York's clean energy future while maintaining the world-class reliability you expect. Your bill is made up of three kinds of charges: the supply and delivery of the power and gas you use, and taxes. Here's where your dollars go.

A man is sitting on a coach with paperwork and a laptop on a coffee table in front of him.

Supply

You get to choose how you buy your energy supply. We don't produce gas or electricity. We buy the energy you use in competitive markets and pass the cost on to you. What we pay is what you pay. If you choose another energy supplier, your bill now shows how that cost compares to buying supply from Con Edison.

Delivery

Delivery is set by the state Public Service Commission and is the only part of your bill that goes to Con Edison. Delivery covers the cost to:

  • Operate and maintain the complex energy grid
  • Keep skilled people working 24/7, in all weather, to keep your energy on
  • Invest to keep our systems safe, reliable, and resilient for severe weather and growing demand

Taxes

Taxes are charges from state and local governments that we collect on their behalf and send directly to them. We make no money on taxes.

Most of the taxes you pay are municipal property taxes on the pipes, wires, and equipment that deliver your energy. These taxes used to be part of your delivery charge. Now, they're listed separately, along with the other taxes on your bill, so you can see where your money goes.
