Gas Service Line Inspections: Frequently Asked Questions

New York State gas safety law requires us to perform an inspection of our gas service line and meter(s) supplying your building. This FAQ page provides important details regarding the Service Line Inspection program.

Yes. This inspection is required by New York State law, so it’s important that you help us complete this work. The frequency of this recurring inspection program depends on your property type (e.g., residential vs. commercial).

To properly inspect all gas service lines, we may need access to your home or building. We will make multiple attempts to perform the inspection. If Con Edison or our qualified contractors are unable to perform the inspection, a technician will leave a drop card behind asking the customer to schedule an appointment

Note: If we are unable to gain access after two unsuccessful attempts, a non-refundable fee up to $500 per meter will be charged. The fee will be charged monthly until the inspection is completed. Once this fee is charged, you also run the risk of having the gas turned off until access is provided to the meters to conduct the safety inspection.

Con Edison or a qualified contractor hired by Con Edison, will perform this work. Our approved contractors are Reconn Utility Services, Storti Quality Services, and Alisto. Con Edison employees and contractors will carry a Con Edison photo ID. No, we do not charge a fee for the inspection, but you may be charged up to $500 per meter per month if we cannot complete your inspection after multiple tries.

The inspection will include a gas leakage survey and a visual inspection for atmospheric corrosion on all exposed piping to the outlet of the Con Edison gas meter inside your home or building.

Our contractors will notify Con Edison immediately if they identify any safety issues, and a Con Edison crew will be dispatched to the address. Our contractors will also report any other deficiencies found to Con Edison, and Con Edison will follow up with the customer.

If you believe your inspection has already been completed, you can email us a photo of your gas meter. Your photo must clearly show the meter number and inspection sticker. We will review the photo, update your account, if necessary, and respond to you as soon as possible.

Please let us know who the appropriate person is to ask for access. Send us an email with that person’s name, the account address, and how we can reach them and we’ll set up an appointment.

If a gas meter is located inside your home or building—yes, the inspector will need to go inside to perform the inspection.

The inspection takes approximately 15 minutes. If we detect an issue, we will remain on your premises until we're able to make the situation safe.

 If we need to access one of our gas meters inside your home or building, you’ll receive a letter in advance from Con Edison or one of our qualified contractors. Customers who do not schedule an appointment should expect an unscheduled visit from Con Edison, or one of our qualified contractors, to attempt to inspect their equipment.

Yes. To schedule an appointment, customers can call Con Edison at 1-800-643-1289 weekdays between 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., or email us.

Calls made outside of these hours will be returned as soon as possible.

Note: We do not schedule appointments for inspections that can be completed outdoors, such as gas leakage surveys and visual reviews of our exposed piping.

If someone arrives on your property unexpectedly for a gas inspection, you can always call us to confirm their identity.

Beginning January 1, 2020, gas piping in 3+ family or commercial buildings must be inspected by a Licensed Master Plumber or qualified individual at least once every four years. All exposed gas lines must be inspected and a report filed with the NYC Department of Buildings. This is in addition to the inspection performed by Con Edison.
