Con Edison Asks Customers in Areas of Northern and Western Queens to Conserve Energy

Company Reduces Voltage by 8 Percent to Maintain Reliability

Con Edison is asking customers in certain neighborhoods in Queens to conserve energy while company crews repair equipment. Con Edison has also reduced voltage by 8 percent in the areas as a precaution to protect equipment and maintain service as repairs are completed.

One area is bounded by the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and 51st Avenue on the north, the Jackie Robinson Parkway on the south, Queens Boulevard on the east, and the Brooklyn borough line on the west. The area includes 115,400 customers in the neighborhoods of Glendale, Forest Hills, Forest Hills Gardens and Middle Village.

The second area is bounded by the East River on the north, 45th Avenue and the Long Island Railroad on the south, the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway on the west and the Grand Central Parkway on the east. The area includes 80,300 customers in the East Elmhurst and Jackson Heights neighborhoods.

The equipment problems in these neighborhoods have no effect on the rest of the Con Edison system.

Con Edison has asked customers in these areas not to use energy-intensive appliances such as washers, dryers, and microwaves until crews complete repairs. The company also asks customers to limit unnecessary use of air conditioning. If you have two air conditioners, use only one and set it to the highest comfortable temperature.

The company also asks customers to refrain from charging their electric vehicles until Con Edison makes repairs.

The voltage reduction also affects a third area. That area is bounded by the Long Island Expressway and the Long Island Railroad on the north, the Grand Central Parkway on the south, the Cross Island Parkway on the east and Queens Boulevard on the west.
